• Gravel base – This is the important foundation for a solid, reliable surface. Asphalt must be stacked on a solid, compacted base with at least six to 12 inches of gravel along the shoulder or outer edges of the finished pavement.
• Edging – This process involves creating a rough outer edge to allow topsoil to cling and keep water from eroding the soil. After the asphalt is rolled and cooled, topsoil is placed along the exposed edges and seeded. When grass is established, the asphalt edges will be supported from the sides, increasing stability.
